Levofloxacin
Indications/Uses
Blepharitis, dacryocystitis, hordeolum, conjunctivitis, tarsadenitis, keratitis (including corneal ulcer), & aseptic treatment during peri-op period for ocular surgery. Susceptible strains of Staph sp., Strep sp., Strep pneumoniae, Enterococcus sp., Micrococcus sp., Moraxella sp., Corynebacterium sp., Klebsiella sp., Enterobacter sp., Serratia sp., Proteus sp., Morganella morganii, H. influenzae, Haemophilus aegyptius [Koch-Weeks bacillus], Pseudomonas sp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Stenotrophomonas (Xanthomonas) maltophilia, Acinetobacter sp., & Propionibacterium acnes.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to levofloxacin, ofloxacin or any quinolone antibiotics.
Special Precautions
Limit treatment to the min period required to avoid emergence of resistant bacteria. Efficacy in MRSA has not been proven. Should be used in pregnancy only if expected therapeutic benefits outweigh possible risks. 1.5% w/v: Take at least 5-min intervals when using >1 ophth drug. Safety in low birth wt infants, neonates, infants or childn has not been established.
Adverse Reactions
Irritation. 0.5% w/v: Corneal lesion eg, keratitis superficial diffuse. 1.5% w/v: Urticaria, itching; dysgeusia.
